On October 27–28, 2023, the 2023 International Scientific Conference on Cardiology and Geriatrics was held at the Pavillon Tan Son Nhat Conference Center in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City. Organized by Thong Nhat Hospital, the event brought together numerous leading healthcare professionals from Vietnam and abroad.
Held biennially, the conference has established itself as a prestigious scientific forum in the fields of cardiology and geriatrics. This year’s program featured 29 scientific sessions across four conference halls and welcomed hundreds of delegates, including professors, associate professors, PhDs, and specialized physicians in cardiology, geriatrics, and other medical disciplines.
Nearly 200 scientific papers and research studies were submitted to the conference. Of these, 62 were selected for publication in the Journal of Community Medicine, and 153 were presented during the event, offering significant academic value and practical insights for healthcare professionals.
Conference overview
In his opening remarks, Associate Professor Dr. Le Dinh Thanh, Director of Thong Nhat Hospital, emphasized the hospital’s position as a top-tier general hospital under the Ministry of Health. Its primary mission is to provide medical care to senior Party and State officials in southern Vietnam, as well as to serve the broader community. Scientific research has always been a key focus alongside patient care, with continuous efforts to organize and implement meaningful academic activities.
Thong Nhat Hospital is also home to Vietnam’s first Department of Geriatrics, established by the late Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Thanh – a People's Physician and Labor Hero. Over the years, the hospital has become one of the leading centers for cardiology and geriatrics in southern Vietnam and is working toward becoming a national-level comprehensive geriatric hospital.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Dinh Thanh further shared: “The global COVID-19 pandemic has left long-term effects, particularly among the elderly with underlying conditions. This presents a new challenge, requiring further research, stronger scientific evidence, and practical solutions to improve patient outcomes and quality of life”.

In addition to its scientific importance, the event also marked the 48th anniversary of Thong Nhat Hospital’s founding (November 1, 1975 – November 1, 2023). Highlighting the importance of continued learning and knowledge exchange, Dr. Thanh noted: “The search for and dissemination of knowledge is the responsibility of scientists and the mission of every healthcare professional. Sharing experiences and learning from one another must remain a continuous part of our work”.
