INDICATIONS

Infection with one or more intestinal parasites such as roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), threadworms (Strongyloides stercoralis), pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), and filarial worms (Mansonella perstans, Wuchereria bancrofti, Loa loa).
Neurocysticercosis caused by Taenia solium involving the central nervous system (intraparenchymal or extraparenchymal).
Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus affecting the liver, lungs, and peritoneum, prior to surgery or when surgery is not feasible.
Cutaneous or visceral larva migrans caused by Toxocara canis or T. cati.
Giardiasis
Liver fluke infection caused by Clonorchis sinensis.
 

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Method of administration: The tablet may be chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed and mixed with food. Fasting and use of laxatives are not required.
Dosage:
Roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm infections
Adults and children > 2 years of age: Single dose of 400 mg/day. May be repeated after 3 weeks.
Children ≤ 2 years of age: Single dose of 200 mg/day. May be repeated after 3 weeks.
Strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis)
Adults and children > 2 years of age: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. May be repeated after 3 weeks.
Children ≤ 2 years of age: 200 mg once daily for 3 days. May be repeated after 3 weeks..

Lymphatic filariasis (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi), occult filariasis (tropical pulmonary eosinophilia):
Diethylcarbamazine is the drug of choice for eliminating both larval and adult filariae.
In endemic areas, annual administration of a single dose of albendazole 400 mg in combination with diethylcarbamazine 6 mg/kg or ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg) is effective in interrupting transmission. Such treatment should be continued for at least 5 years. Neurocysticercosis (Cysticercus cellulosae)
Adults and children > 6 years of age, body weight ≥ 60 kg: 400 mg twice daily, taken with food, for 8–30 days.
Patients < 60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day (maximum 800 mg/ngày), pided into two doses, taken with food, for 8–30 days. Treatment may be repeated if necessary.
No dosage has been established for children under 6 years of age.

Hydatid disease (Echinococcus) (treatment in combination with surgery):
Adults and children > 6 years of age, body weight ≥ 60 kg: 400 mg twice daily, taken with food, for 28 days, followed by a 14-day drug-free interval. A total of 3 treatment cycles. 
Patients < 60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day (maximum 800 mg/day), pided into two doses, taken with food, for 28 days, followed by a 14-day drug-free interval. A total of 3 treatment cycles.
No dosage has been established for children under 6 years of age.

Cutaneous larva migrans:
Adults: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. Treatment may be extended to 5–7 days..
Children: 5 mg/kg/day for 3 days. 

Toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans):
Adults and children: 400 mg twice daily for 5 days. 

Giardiasis
Adults and children: 400 mg once daily for 5 days.

Liver fluke infection (Clonorchis sinensis)
Adults and children: 10 mg/kg/day for 7 days.
 

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to benzimidazole compounds or to any of the excipients.

Women who are pregnant or suspected to be pregnant.
